Everyone has been bitten by the selfie bug these days and the manufacturers are trying to serve devices cashing on this obsession. Karbonn recently launched the Titanium S19 and they have been dubbing it as the selfie smartphone. It comes with decent specification for a budget device and offer good value for money. It comes with impressive camera on the back to get some impressive shot and a high resolution front camera to capture impressive selfies. On the other hand, Lava sells a decent budget device called the Iris X1. This device came in as a competition to the Moto E and is really good device. Now this device will face competition from the new entrant here, Titanium S19. We put these two against each other to see which one of them makes for a better deal.
The Karbonn Titanium S19 has got a nice design and decent built quality. The front is dominated with glass but the bezel around the display is fat. This makes the device a bit large as compared to the other 5 inch devices. There are three capacitive keys just below the display. The back curves near the edges and is soft to touch. It allows for easy handling of the device. It feels solidly built though the weight distribution isn’t very good.
The Lava Iris X1 has got an impressive design. The device is slim at just 8.9 mm. it looks premium for its price and is well built. The front and back panel are flat giving it a nice look. It has got a metal band running around its sides and this gives it a look similar to the iPhone 5 or 5S, only on a different scale. There are capacitive keys right below the display which further add to the size like the Titanium S19. The device is light and tips the scale at just 138 Gms. Due to the smaller display size, it is smaller than the Titanium S19 and thus easier to handle.
The Karbonn Titanium S19 has got a 5 inch semi HD display. It is an IPS LCD display so colours and viewing angles are impressive. You get very well saturated colours and the contrast ratio is decent as well. The colours aren’t very true but not many people would notice that. The display is crisp with a pixel density of 294 ppi and you will be able to read small texts easily. As it is an OGS display, it isn’t very reflective and thus improves sunlight readability. The display on the Lava Iris X1 is disappointing. It comes with an IPS LCD display as well but the pixel density is low reducing the sharpness of the display. It is a 4.5 inch display with a resolution of 480 x 854 pixels. The pixel density turns out to be a poor 218 pixels per inch. The display looks hazy and small texts aren’t readable without zooming in. apart from that the quality of display and viewing angles are acceptable.
The Karbonn Titanium S19 runs a 1.3 GHz quad core processor and has got 1 GB of RAM. You get 8 GB of internal storage which can be expanded by up to 32 GB using micro SD card. It is a dual SIM device and supports 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and micro USB 2.0. It runs on a 2000 mAh battery which should be fairly decent for the device. On the other hand, the Lava Iris X1 as got a Broadcom chipset with a quad core processor running at a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. This one also comes with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage. You get a micro SD card slot on this device as well. This one offers similar connectivity options as the Titanium S19. Both the devices are evenly matched here in terms of hardware. Both the devices run android KitKat 4.4.2.
We really liked the camera on Lava Iris X1 when we compared it to other devices of its category. Most of the devices in this category offer a 5 megapixel camera but the Iris X1 edged them out with its 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and touch focus. It also offers LED flash to shoot in the dark. The overall quality of image is nice and you can shoot some clear pictures in well-lit conditions. However the images are a bit under saturated at times but not something you can’t live with. The camera is able to record videos in full HD. It has got a 2 megapixel front camera which is decent for the device.
The Karbonn Titanium makes the cameras on Lava Iris X1 look dull all of a sudden. It comes with a 13 megapixel primary camera. The camera uses a Sony Exmore camera sensor. It is supposed to improve low light performance of camera and reduces the noise in images. To further improve image quality and low light performance, it comes with an f/2.0 lens allowing more light onto the sensor. They have been calling this the Selfie phone and that is why they have provided a 5 megapixel camera on the front. The camera software has got some additions as well to make things easy for the user. It features a voice controlled capture and a live photo mode which allows you to preview the image through different filters.
In terms of hardware, both the devices are almost even here. The Karbonn Titanium S19 comes with a slightly bigger price tag but then for that price, it offers a lot more over the Lava Iris X1. You get a bigger and sharper display, a high resolution front camera, an impressive rear camera and a bigger battery. The extra price you pay for this device would be easily justified by these features. The Lava Iris X1 is available for around 8K on most online stores. The Karbonn is available for INR 8999.
